The lookup doesnt provide a result with any lack of precision.
It does if you aren't using whole angles.

@Abomination: As FlameDuck described the speeds depend on which processor/memory combo you have. On my machine at work (P4 3.6GHz 1Gb ram) your test is 27 vs 53, while my test above is 65 vs 79.

And if you want to do a lookup table for random numbers as well, be my guest, but in my honest opinion it (lookups for simple operations) is a pointless excercise. But one that pops up at regular intervals :)
