To make a game outside the 'Tribes' box you need to modify it. Not that it's really that difficult to do. You just need to get over any fears that you won't do it and just make sure to comment any changes to the engine. You can make it do whatever you want pretty easily especially now that the community over there has really dug into most common problems already.
