With me, it would be a tie between Super Mario and Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic's awesome in the way that playing a level is a lot like riding a roller coaster, IMHO. However, I also liked the original Duke Nukem series, nice music, nice interactivity, and everything else for that matter. Apogee (now 3D Realms) took platforming to a whole new level. Even tho it's a shooter, there are plenty of platform elements in the whole Duke Nukem series thus far (maybe not Duke 3D, but all the others were sidescrollers, and those are a great reason to enjoy PC platformers). A lot of different platformers have different influences. Just have to figure out which ones work best for you and your style.
