Its not an original idea, there are a good handful of games floating around which does basically the same. I think you are safe to do your own version without problems at all. I have another version on my website which have two modes, one true to the other versions I have seen, and another mode where there are bonus pieces you can pickup which reduces the player size again or slows down the speed of the pieces to pick up.
