Never seen a BOSD in XP yet and it used to happen daily in 2K. It also runs office and the web faster on a Pentium 2 400 Geforce 2 than it ran on Win2k.
I don't have to reinstall windows every 3 months to keep it from deteriorating over time as I used to with win2k.
But then, perhaps I run more demanding software than you more often (shrug)
So long as you have at least 512mb of ram XP has proven a much better experience for me. Of course you do have to go and do all the optimisations first, registry and services. But after that it's easily the best windows for running my software yet.
