3D modelling is in dire need of a new software package that has the power of a maya of 3dsm but isn't designed by programmers for programmers.
3D modelling programs at this time are akin to carving with a spoon... sure... it is possible to make the statue of david... It just isn't natural.
these programs force artists to learn the software.. which is why there are few good 3d modellers.. and in general, what you see in 3d is hardly ever as good as what you see in 2d when it comes to animation. Or when it comes to sculpting. The learning curve and prices prevent a lot of great artists from being about to do it.... In fact... in all the pro 3d animation studios they have the 3D modellers and the concept artists. Where the concept artists draw in 2D or make clay models, and then the model guys make those drawings, simply because they don't have the talent to think up great character art themselves.
I want to see a very easy system, which can be tweeked at the level of a maya... but can be roughed in when it comes to geometry and materials... Like you should be able to tell it you want glass... and make pick from a few kinds of glass.. then if it still doesn't look exectly right to your picky eyes, you can go in and tweek the stats (which are all renamed to make sense)
No artist should even be forced to know what the difference between a Lambert and the Blinn is....
