It's a good learning experience and with a deadline it helps to start and complete a project. Remaking an old game can help to get a better understanding of what makes a fun game. I'm pretty sure everyone who enters a game is ranked, at least I was when I did it a year or two ago - did pretty poorly. There are some really good remakes usually at the top of the rankings. I don't know your experience level with this stuff but I found it is worth picking a really simple game to remake and polish it well if you want to get it finished in the time available.
