Well look guys, TV has not had a major breakthrough since color. Progressive scan and lcd/plasma is the new big feature that trully has revolutionized the image quality. All those 3D comb filters did little.
I embrace the technology and know a little about the LCD/Plasma process and while there is a big part that is being driven by demand, technology itself is rather expensive. I mean, we are not just talking about todays production cost, but the 10 - 15 years of research.
But today we have EDTVs that are the transitionary for the average joe where you get much of the new features without the expensive resolution. And besides, they still have yet to come out with a 42"+ plasma or lcd that is 1920x1080 which is the true HDTV.
And besides, now that LCD/Plasma screens have come home, our pets can now watch TV with us!
