I think games try and use graphics to make up for a lack of everything else. Most games today are over simple in the gameplay department, and a lot needs to be done in other areas like AI, and more realistic behaviour. Not so much to make the enemy more chalenging, but to make your environment more interesting.
These days you need 10 hours of sprawling interesting graphics, because at the end of the day an FPS is so basic, that without the eye candy your going to be bored within the first 5 minutes.
You need everything else to catch up with the graphics, and make you enjoy the game more, so you don't need all that media to compensate for the lack of everything else.
