I started reading computermags on the library, then decided to save for a C64. I started the thing, saw Commodore BASIC V2, and reached for the manual. Then I just started playing around, typing in the listings in the manual, typing in Basic programs from magazines etc. Then I got an Amiga, and started to play around with the horrible Microsoft product called Amiga Basic. Later I bought AMOS, AMOS 3D and AMOS compiler. AMOS was a great little package. 3D and a compiler meant that I was making a first person shooter heavily inspired by Mercenary III before long.
Ahh, those were the days! When the mags were without colour and they were full of program listings and stuff like 'how to program your 1571' or 'Machine code for beginners'.
The Amiga age really was the golden age of gaming. Indies were able to compete head to head with EA and Microsoft, and there were thousands of independent publishers.
