Microsoft does work with nearly all manufacturers to make sure that their products are pretty well supported. I don't think most people would expect Microsoft themselves to write drivers for a manufacturers product. Microsoft does also release generic drivers for most things and this does work although there can be a performance decrease.
Microsoft does however provide plenty of support for manufacturers and I don't think there will be a big problem for most people migrating to Vista.
