i think that a lot of people will be amazed at how seamlessly the resource hogging 3D gui effects disappear when their games are running in full screen...
there's a whole lot more to vista than just the obvious... the eye candy is the hook to get the curious and susceptable consumer's attention (some would argue it's value and enhanced usability)... to the techno nerds, a look under the hood, especially at dx10 might be quite revealing, as well as educational... especially in the current turbulent waters of doom and gloom for all us poor less than min requirement system owners and laptop users...
most of your concerns are unfounded, and based on not knowing the real facts about the great godzilla... he's not gonna be that bad of a monster...
in another year or so, most of you will be happily singing the praises of vista and dx10... and wondering how you ever got along without it...
the rest will either be trying to get it to run on your new age intelmacs, or be closet *Nix devotees, not asking, and not telling...
the future has already happened... we're merely racing to catch up to it... try for a second to imagine yourself a year down the line... things will suddenly start to take on a new definition when viewed from that perspective, and soon you will be able to feel (see, sense, whatever) the future... and you will not fear it as much.
