You just need a tool to look at memory, scan all memory
for the same number as you got lives. Gain one life or
loose one and search again. This way you might find like
4-5 locations in memory with the corresponding numbers.
Do it again to narrow down further or just try to edit
one of them and so on until you find the correct one.

And I think it gives you the memory address so you can see if you need to just poke a number into a certain address... it used to LOCK this number as well... I used it in Diablo sometimes... doesn't do so good now.
