You just need a tool to look at memory, scan all memory
for the same number as you got lives. Gain one life or
loose one and search again. This way you might find like
4-5 locations in memory with the corresponding numbers.
Do it again to narrow down further or just try to edit
one of them and so on until you find the correct one.
When you find it keep updating it or look for places in
the code they manipulate the specific address and change
the "inc" or "dec" (usually) with "nop"'s....
Plain and simple, done it on some occasions when stuck
in impossible games.
