There's a programme called StarMaker which allows you to edit characters afaik. Star Maker is an external tool which comes with the game.
The new expansion pack does allow you to change some aspects of the default characters (of which there are a load more I think). So you can now make the slim chap into a chubby chap etc. You do that inside the game.
You do have a lot more control over a lot of aspects with the expansion pack, it make the game far nearer to what everyone was expecting originally I think.
