UK vs. US

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/UK vs. US

There are plenty of websites showing comparisons of common differences in language.

Beyond the actual spelling of words that is different there are also differences in how sentences are put together.

British is much more wordy and longwinded. If you chop out as much unnecessary `bumph` as possible it sounds more American, which is more spontaneous and simple.

Also emphasis is wholly different both in the pronunciation of the words and in the order in which the emphasis is expected to flow, with it being generally the opposite in each country.

In American speak, they usually put more emphasis on the start of a sentence and the start of each word, whereas British puts more emphasis toward the end of the sentence and the end of the word. This is a general rule, might not always apply. Usually they are opposite.

America: "COUldn't EXplain WHat haPPENED"
British: "coulDN't exPLAIN whAT HAppened"

Something like that.

Just don't refer to words like fanny or pants in the wrong way.
