"We get 100 Amps of incoming power capacity to our homes. Americans can't even run an electric kettle. Seriously, just try and buy a kettle in the US, you get funny looks."
Ha! I'll have you know I FOUND an electric kettle at the gourmet kitchen/food store at the local mall. :-)
Funny story about boiling water though. I live in an older building, with cruddy wiring, and if I try to run the microwave and the toaster at the same time, I lose all power to my kitchen because it trips the circuit breaker. :-)
Of course there's no such problem making toast and boiling water with my coffee maker. Darned microwaves!
As for amps:
Our dryer outlets are 30 amps at 240 volts. I've seen the dryers you guys have on TV... The hole is about 1' (30 centimeters) wide to stuff the clothes in! You can fit like ONE blanket in there. Our dryers have like 4x the capacity, and a hole about twice as wide.
So if we only need 30 amps to run that huge dryer, you English chaps must make a hell of a lot of tea to need 100 amps at 240 volts.
Either that or all your computers and TV's and Radios are still running off vaccuum tubes.
