I believe it's based on DIVX but avoids some licensing issues or something.
DivX was open source up to v3, after which it went commercial. XviD worn born as a result - and explains why it can read four types fof streams, DivX 3-, DivX 4+ (in most cases no probs), standard MPEG4 and of course XviD =]
