passing image to function

O.K.,
So,that means if I do this

a=loadimage("image.png")
b=a
c=a
d=a

then whatever I do to b,c,or d will effect a,b,c or d.I was also wondering about passing images to functions but I guess I'm not passing the image but a pointer to the image.
