I'm sure everyone would love to see a good car simulation for JV-ODE! It'll settle the idea that it can/cannot be done. The JV-ODE car demo is extremely simple and not set up for tinkering for people to try and get different car handling.

Vorderman : In trying to get two different directional friction values, were you using sufficiently outrageously high values for mu as needed? Low values for mu, averaged between wheel and road, would cause little variation between the two directions. On a road surface of mu=0, 100% friction for a fast spinning wheel might be something like mu=10,000, and you'd be looking at mu=1,000 for half the friction. The friction values for ODE aren;t straightforward, but I've never tried anisotropic frictions so can only guess this might be a problem, if it isn't fundamentally broken in the engine.
