I think it's horses for courses. If you like Otis Redding then it just isn't the same without a donkey widdling on a crisp packet in the background. If you are into Enya then such a thing has no place and is of extreme irritance.
What I find intolerable is this "digital remastering". That, I think, means "drag some idiot off of the street who knows nothing about anything and put them in charge of mixing". I've lost count of the number of albums totally ruined by remixing.
