DirectX 10 NOT backwards compatible

I wouldn't use linux for lack of standardisation too. Plus the limited number of commercial apps that I could use with linux, like Maya has no developer support.

Without a single flavour of linux and a bunch of standardisation I'm not surprised either. Windows does a good job despite all its shortcomings. And I've noticed a huge improvement in quality with MS products over the last 5 years. I think they do realise that they have to compete and they seem to be trying to address what people want.

Not always that easy when you can't turn around and drag 90% of computer users on a whim. Something that other OS's can do due to a small enthusiast marketshare.

We have to put up with alot of junk but so does windows, there's a back catalogue of rubbish hardware and broken drivers and backwards compatibility to keep the hordes happy.

In the short term Vista ill be have a slow pickup, but most people upgrade their systems on a fairly regular basis, and in 3 years time 80% of people will be able to run apps in vista better than they can in current OS's.
