Umm, it's a server and server's are meant to be on all the time? ;]
Umm, don't know what you did wrong, but I used WinServer2003 as a gaming machine successfully for 6 months. Perhaps you should have turned on hardware acceleration ;] In fact the only problem I had was getting Logitech's drivers to install their crap for the extra buttons on my keyboard (which I couldn't live without).
