The problem is - a 24 hour competition like this needs advertising and a prize to encourage lots of entries. Even then, there's not much you can do in 24 hours.
That's why contests usually advertise weeks before it starts, and only announce the subject the day it starts. For example, you might advertise that you are starting a competition in one month, and announce what the prizes are. Then, when the competition begins, you announce the subject (for example, "Tank games", "Flight simulators", "Racing games", etc.). This more specific you make the competition, the less probable cheating is and the easier judging is.
Maybe, but by 24 hours after I begun my tank game, it was pretty much completed, although it was much simpler than it is now (without player-to-AI orders, not-so-smart AI, only 2 tanks per team, etc.). Of course now it's been about 38 hours and my game is much improved. The problem with not announcing a competition before it begins is it makes it hard for new entries as the deadline approaches.
What if someone already has a platformgame engine laying around, and only needs to add new gfx/music/maps etc.?

lol, the "Write A Game in 24 hours Contest!" has become a "Write a Game in 6 days contest" :-P
