Believe it or not WinXP runs most office stuff IE6, Office2003 etc better on My Pentium 2 400 with a Geforce 2 than the same apps on both Win2000 and Win98.
It does have 256mb of ram, but thats expected of all comparable OS's these days. I doubt that VISTA will have that high demands that you can't run it on a regular PC today. So long as you turn off the fancy graphics stuff.
