Sony MP3 Player

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Sony MP3 Player

My girlfriend got a Sony "bean" MP3 player. It plugs into a USB port, and I first expected to be able to copy mp3's straight over from the hard drive to the device. However, it seems that you have to use Sony's "Sonic Stage" software. To copy an mp3 from the computer to the mp3 player, you first have to import the mp3 into the program's "library". Then you have to select the file and transfer it to the mp3 player. The program actually converts the audio file into some unknown file format that the player reads. So it's not actually an mp3 player at all.

I'm not really familiar with mp3 players, but it seems like you should be able to just copy mp3 files over to the device, using Windows Explorer. Using a special software program to convert and move files seems ridiculous. Before I suggest she take it back, can anyone tell me if I should expect other mp3 players to allow no-BS copying straight over to the device, without a bunch of stupid software?

Please don't argue about how much you hate Sony. Just tell me if normal mp3 players just let you transfer files straight to and from the player, without all this hassle.
