if a virus checker is not running, you will only know if it has a payload and it goes off. But until you find out, the virus is now spreading from your machine to others.
A payload may not me disructive to the computer. It could be aimed at hurting the user. i.e Ident theft , stealing bank info, putting a hole in your firewall.
So a virus does not always inform you. And if it does it is to late!
