If you can't succeed then do the next best thing, help the next generation of game wannabe developers, do what halo is doing, and other community members who are producing tools to make it easier for the new commers to get in and produce something. Halo had same dreams as you and he pushed them aside realizing that no matter how many artists join him he will not be able to pull it off, so he starts writting tools and I belive he is doing some nice money with his tools.
What prevents you from doing the same? If your dreams are about to die, then help the next generation to make their come trhu and you will be part of it atleast then instead of giving up and being forgoten in this field or being remebered as dreamer that never realized what he needed to focus on and use his strenght ;)
I really can't understand this obsession you had with your strange weapon system concept that you based everything around and wanted to build gigantic project around. Nothing cool about it to rest of us except perhaps to you and you wasted so much time on it for nothing in the end, well perhaps a lesson so next time you know when the bad idea is bad idea. Nobody would play game becasuse of some cool weapon system. Forget that @#!* and forget community projects and move on to something more helpfull to community and do it this time your self ;) If you got coding skillz realize others people dreams and then maybe your dreams will come thru...
