I don't like chiptunes. Depends on the system btw.. for my own MSX there are quite some sound-extensions available, so some of the classic chip-artifacts (arpeggio etc.) aren't required to create something decent.
Some 'chip'-tunes made by Konami on MSX (Metal Gear for example) are quite decent however.. but it was true 3-channel music, not some uberhacked music format which tried to act like more than 3 channels. (yes I really don't like arpeggios :P)
