Yeah, you should see some of the funny XGamestation forum posts. I frequent there, but usually don't post.
I think the problem with XGamestation is, he promised an FPGA video/audio hardware, and took it out at the last minute to use an SX. :)
But yeah, hopefully it won't be long before my console is out, and you will be able to do it. Hardware is actually easier to write sprites, and tile map hardware in, because you don't have to worry about clock cycles really.. The only clock cycles you have to worry about is the reading and writing to sram, unlike an cpu. :)
Basically it's a few state machines, with a multiplexer choosing which pixel to output to the screen at the right time. :D
