Digital distribution - the future

Miscellaneous Forums/General Discussion/Digital distribution - the future

[edit]Just seen jhockings post after writing this lot. You're right, though, I think we're talking about slightly different things. I know I'm probably being naive, but I want to be optomistic about the future if it is going to be all DD. :)
[/edit]

Can I make it plain, again, that I'm talking about DD in the future. Can we please stop going back to steam and it's inadequacies. To make it clear, I mean a future where you:

1 - See on your digital TV service (or whatever) a game that you want.
2 - You buy the game and have it digitally delivered to your console or it's removable storage device.
3 - You play the game.
4 - The game works.
5 - You never have to contact the company that sold/made the game ever again.
6 - The end.

But they don't offer a product! When you "buy a game", you don't own the game, you just get a non-exclusive license to play it
I disagree. Without getting bogged down in semantics, at the end of the day you're buying a product - that product is the game.

Publishers and developers offer a service.
Again, I disagree. What is the 'service' they're selling, exactly? Just because a DD game can't be held in your hand, doesn't mean it's not a product. There's probably a really great analogy I could make here, but it escapes me for the moment. :)
