I followed your instructions but the 'Weld' option only appears to be available in the 'object' mode. When I select weld after selecting the inner faces it gives a message 'Found no faces to weld'.
I'm trying to join two halves of a mesh together, so the example I've given above isn't very good. The two inner faces would not be present, just the vertices.
