Delete/Remove Menu?

Does anyone know how to delete/remove/free a menu item once it has been created?

I have created a rudimentary bookmarks menu for an html gadget, and I add a menu item every time a new bookmark is added. But I don't know how to remove a menu item if the user wants to delete one of those bookmarks.
